UnderDogSidebarImageThe NASA New Horizons traveled 3 billion miles for nearly 10 years and the result has been surprising and stunning pictures of a former planet.

First of all, Pluto is much larger than originally believed. In fact, Pluto was demoted from a “planet” in 2006 because it did not meet one of the three new IAU requirements to be considered a planet. After that date, it has been categorized as a dwarf planet or a minor planet. Two different states (Illinois and New Mexico) then passed laws that, in those states, Pluto is to be called a “planet”. With the discoveries of the New Horizon, which NASA has described as “surprising”, the debate over the status of Pluto has again heated up. But why do people care? What is it about this little celestial body that has captivated the hearts and minds of millions and caused so much controversy?

For Americans, I think part of it comes from National pride. Pluto is the only planet discovered by an American, but I think there is more to it than that. People love underdogs. Rooting for the underdog is what makes March Madness so much fun. Underdogs have to fight for the upper hand in every contest and, when they win, it is because they put their heart and soul into whatever it is they were competing for.

At Teton Guitars, we feel like we are the underdogs. There are way bigger guitar makers out there. They have way bigger advertising budgets. Because we feel like underdogs we have to be the best we can be. We have had to design better guitars than the competition. We have had to find the right factory that can build the guitars the way we want them. We have had to create a grassroots marketing effort in order for people to even hear about our products. And because we have had to fight and claw to gain ground, we have found success. Not only do we have great music stores all over the US standing behind our product and introducing Teton to guitar players, we have people who love our guitars and recommend Teton to all of their guitar playing associates. Just as Pluto cannot continue its fight for planethood without a devoted fan base, Teton guitars would not be one of the fastest growing guitar brands in the music industry without our devoted fans. For that we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Keep making music and keep sharing that music with the world!

Now someone needs to write a song about Pluto and perform it on a Teton and then we would really be sticking it to the man.
