Here at Teton Guitars basecamp, we are always looking for ways to help others. Part of being blessed with so much is the responsibility to give back and find ways to help others. We do this locally, as a company, by sponsoring the Museum of Idaho and other groups that reinforce and promote local art. We can discuss how Teton Guitars is involved in our community in another blog post. Right now I want to talk about how we, as individuals, can get involved.

Individually, each of us has our favorite ways to give back. I want to discuss a few of my favorites.

  1. My local church. I love using a local church to find ways to help in my community. Religious leaders are very in tune with the needs of those in their community. And, what is even cooler, almost every community has a non-denominational or multi-denominational group that works to help everyone in need with no regard to a person’s particular religious affiliation. Even if you are not a religious person, you can still reach out to these groups and they will be more than happy to help you find those that could benefit from your generosity. You will be able to find plenty of ways to donate your time and energy to help right there in your community.
  2. Hogwarts Running Club (HRC). Full disclosure – I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have become a huge fan of running. What better combination for me than this club. Six times a year, the HRC hosts virtual runs where participants run/walk to complete the miles wherever they want and when it works best for them. Most races cost $25 and $21 of those dollars goes to a selected charity organization that was nominated by a member of the HRC. The other 4 bucks is the cost of the medal (which are always cool) and shipping. Each person wanting to join The Hogwarts Running Club should be sorted into a house (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin) and that becomes your team. Each house (team) has a facebook page to encourage each other. The HRC is a fun way for nerds to get exercise and do good at the same time.
  3. Charity Miles App. For me, this app goes hand in hand with the Hogwarts Running Club. The Charity Miles app allows you to choose which organization you want to raise money for. You are then paired with a corporate sponsor who pays the organization you have chosen for each mile you move. 25 cents for each mile ran or walked and 10 cents for each mile biked. What a great way to get out and get those muscles fired up. So, how I tie this app in with the Hogwarts Running Club is by collecting miles for my house (team). I am a Ravenclaw, and I have joined the team on Charity Miles. All the miles I collect helps boost my team’s total miles and, at the end of the year, the house with the most miles averaged per member “wins” the House Cup. If you don’t understand any of my Harry Potter lingo, then please go read the books or at least watch the movies.

There are so many ways to help others. These are just a few that I really enjoy. I encourage each of you to find ways to give back and then share what you have found with others. The more people that open their hearts and wallets and give of their time to those who are less fortunate, the more we will all be blessed and come closer together. When you think about it, that’s really what music is all about, isn’t it? People coming together. So, now I challenge you to go make some great music to bring people together and then go find ways to help serve your fellow human beings.
